A couple weeks ago, Mom snagged a huge box of vintage linens at the auction… $5 people!! We had no idea what was in that big ‘ol box, it was a mystery box of sorts, but those are the best kind and we couldn’t wait to get to diggin’! Mom slowly pulled the pieces out… dust plumes and all! And lo and behold.. it was chock full of amazing linens, doilies, even a couple table cloths! Mom was the big winner of the box of goodies so she picked out the pieces she wanted first! In her ‘disgard’ pile were these heart doilies!!
Score!! They were perfect for my burlap pillows… and just in time for Valentine’s Day!!
I have sewn a pair of curtains or two in my time… but geez. It just takes soooo long to dig out the sewing machine (my house is a disaster) and then find a clean space to set it all up! So, I decided I would tackle a no-sew pillow!! And I have to say, once you go no-sew, you’ll never go back!!
Here’s a peak at my supplies!
-heat ‘n bond hem tape
Start by measuring your burlap and cutting it into a strip. I laid my pillow out and wrapped the burlap around it to measure how much I would need to cover all sides. Leave enough so that you can overlap the burlap on the back, to create the envelope slot! Then, I ironed my burlap to get out any creases.
Once your fabric is all smoothed out, you’ll need to hem the edges of your ‘short side’. Just fold it over, the width of your hemming tape and iron according to the directions on the hem tape package.
This picture will give you a better idea of where you are supposed to hem…along the top and bottom of your long strip. Then, you will fold the bottom about halfway up and seal the sides. Make sure your burlap is inside out… so you can flip it when you’re done and not see the rough edges. See the hem?
And once you’ve sealed the bottom half, fold the top down, overlap enough to create your envelope and seal the sides of the top half as well. Make sense? This is harder to explain than I thought. Hopefully the little captions help…
Then, you can flip your pillow case right side out! It should look something like this.
And stuff your pillow inside.
Now for the fun part!! Decorate!! I attached the doilies the same way… with my hem tape. Apply the hem tape to the back of the doily…
and iron it on the front of the pillow!!
I added the little round doilies around the edges to spiffy her up a bit!! And that was it!! I like that the the doilies are not attached all the way to the edge… I think it gives it a ruffly effect!!
I’m not one to really decorate for Valentine’s day… but I think these are cute enough, I could leave them out year round and perhaps make some others to match!
I think my first no-sew pillow was a success!! Have you ever tried a no-sew pillow?? Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day?
