How to Make Your Own Wood Pallet Christmas Tree {Video Tutorial} #12DaysofTrees

We built our Christmas tree using some wood we salvaged from a couple old pallets. It took 11 boards to make our tree, with two tiny pieces for the trunk! Our 11 boards started at 34 inches long and went back 3 inches from there for each piece… so 34 inches, 31 inches, 28 inches, 25 inches, you get my drift?? That would allow of an inch and a half on each side as we went up the tree. So, the piece that tops our tree is 4 inches long! I just eyeballed a couple small pieces for the trunk, but I’d say they are probably about 7 inches long.

Here’s how we did it…

Now, the fun part… making our Silhouette snowflakes!! As promised, I did a separate video to walk you through step-by-step for all you first time Silhouetters!! Is that a word?? This was my first ever Silhouette project… and I was quite surprised with how easy and fun it was!! Now this video is a bit lengthy… 10 minutes or so, but I can promise it will walk you through each and every step if you are using your Silhouette CAMEO® for the very first time!

So do you feel like you are ready to take on the world?!? Or at least a Silhouette project or two?? I was quite pleased with the transformation… and although this is a Christmas tree… I feel good about leaving it out all Winter long!!

  1. OMGosh! What a great tutorial! I just love that you jumped right in with your Silhouette and did a snowflake! What a fabulous way to get going and show how truly easy it is! I am still not brave enough to do tutorials! And showing us how to build the DIY Christmas tree too! I subscribed so I can follow you as you create more beautiful things!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Oh, thank you so much, Bev!! I tell ya, that little Cameo was so easy to learn!! I LOVE it!! I see everything that you lovely ladies make with yours and I am stoked to learn more!! The tutorial video was pretty basic, but I know when I was searching for a beginner video, I was hard pressed to find one! So, like everything else I do… if I can’t find what I want… I make it!! Ha ha!! I’m so glad you liked it!! There will be lots more fun videos to come!! Thank you so much for subscribing… you won’t be disappointed! 😉

  2. OH boy, believe me if I had $130 I’d be buying one of those little sweeties but that ain’t gonna happen so I’ll continue to improvise.
I love your pallet tree. Now that we can make. Have lots of pallet wood out in yard. Means hubs will have to take a pallet or two apart but I’ll ask anyway. Maybe I’ll offer to help.
I’d love to have him make this for our yard. I’ll have him drill holes so we can put some lights in tree. I happen to have some bigger snow flake stencils so they’ll work just fine on the tree. Have some other larger stencils so we could have a great time on the tree. Now if we can convince the dog it’s not for his nashing on, lol. He loves to chew wood. Nobody else would have one around here.
    Hope you had great Thanksgiving.

    • Oooohhh… lights would be awesome on this little tree!! Perhaps I will take your advice and drill some of my own!! I tell ya, I didn’t have a Silhouette until a few days ago… and I swooned over how everyone else was able to do all of these projects with such ease. You can totally do it with stencils… and I can’t tell you how many times I have used chalk to transfer images as well! So there are ways to get around it… it just takes more time! But in the end.. you have something you can be proud of!!

I won’t make any promises… but sometimes Silhouette allows us to GIVEAWAY one of their fab machines!! So we are lucky enough to get one here on Vintage News Junkie… you will have to enter to win!! In the mean time, if you follow other blogs, there are lots of gals out there that do Silhouette giveaways!! So search them out… and maybe you can get one of your own!! 🙂

  3. I swear, every time I watch your videos, Candace, I’m blown away by not only your ability to create stunning projects on a dime, but I’m in awe of your talent for the medium of video tutorials. Seriously, everything from your lack of fillers like, “ummm” or “like” and the deliberate way that you handle your props and your enthusiasm…I just wish I could take a class from you on all this! (Hmmm….hint hint…eCourse idea…How to Vlog like a Rockstar: Tips from an Emmy-Award Winning News Reporter turned Blogger. Booyah!)

And huge high five on this your first Silhouette project! You knocked it out of the park! I can only imagine where you are going to go from here….

    • Yay! Yay! Yay! Lauren… you better plant those feet of yours! I’m kicking the videos into high gear and not looking back!! Ha ha!! And I’ll make you a deal…. you do a Video Tutorial on how to start an eCourse and I’ll do an eCourse on how to do a Video Tutorial!! Deal? Deal! I have no idea how to do an eCourse, but it sounsds like loads of fun!!

And thank you for all of your guidance working through this first Silhouette project! Like lots of other things in this blog world, I couldn’t do it without you!! You’re the best! 🙂

  4. This is soooooo cool! I’d love to have my own pallet tree on my front porch this holiday! Complete with a pair vintage ice skates, of course! Awesome diy Candace!!

    • Oh, thank you, Emily! You are so sweet… you should make you one!! Lots of free pallets on craigslist! I say, no porch is complete without one! Now, the skates, those may be a little harder to come by! I picked mine up at a yard sale this past summer! Who wants ice skates in July?!? THIS GIRL!!!

  5. Anna Ibarra says:

HI Candance, just found your blog and love your pallet tree, as I was looking for directions to make a pallet tree. I like yours the best so far. I’d like to ask, from a novice here, what kind of nail gun you use. I’m giving myself some tools, and one of them is the table saw adversities on your blog. Couldn’t’ tell the nail gun you were using. Thank you again for sharing.

    • Thank you, Anna! I am so happy that the tutorial is helpful!! I use the Ryobi Airstrike. You can pick it up at Home Depot! I love it and you can interchange it with several other tools that they offer! All on one battery!! I hope that helps! I’d love to see your tree if you make one!! Shoot me a picture over on Facebook!! 🙂 Sure, hope to see you soon!

  6. Great video’s —thanks for taking the fear out of my purchasing a Silhoutte. I LOVE the pallet tree – I was thinking I will have my Mister make one this weekend (he doesn’t know it yet). I will add some spray adhesive and throw on some glitter for the whole “glistening snow effect.” I too signed up for your email – don’t want to miss out on your creative brain. Keep the videos coming – I am a visual learner. LOL

    • Ooohhh… glitter makes everything better, Claire!! I would love to see a pic of your masterpiece!! You’ll have to share with me on Facebook!! And thank you, thank you, for signing up for email updates! You will surely like being the first to know when new videos are up!! We plan to dive even deeper into these video tutorials in 2014… it’s gonna be a BLAST!!

  7. LOVE this pallet tree… everything about it is great!!

  8. Genius, and gorgeous!
